The typical player - be it professional or amateur - will not have a great deal of knowledge about how to train optimally. It is understandable - after all, they do not have time nor the care to spend multiple hours a day researching, learning and applying. That is less of a problem if you are under the care of top coaches who have done the years of leg work for you. Of course, even in those cases however, it is wise to do the due diligence to learn as much as possible, question approaches and continually improve understanding.
For those trying to advance in ability without the access or resources however, there is a common issue of ‘overfitting’ the training process. Players are drawn to the shiniest, sharpest cut diamond they see - the “Instagram training” which is most appealing to their eye. Ignoring the numerous other issues with blindly copying drills you see online, there is a specific aspect to this which you should be careful of. If you have not yet mastered the basics, the proven well-founded training methodology, you may well be thwarting your growth by attempting overly advanced drills and executing them poorly.
As a general rule of thumb, the greater the uncertainty, or the gap in your knowledge of how to best train, the more you should watch out for overfitting. Keep it simple. Stick to what is based. Take the guaranteed improvement of spending time mastering the basics first. You would be surprised just how much you can improve without having to get ultra-fancy!
